Summary.
Antioxidant vitamins (A, E, C, B2) are substances that in the recent years become increasingly popular for prescription and dispensing by doctors and pharmacists. The purpose of this work is to consider the application of this group of vitamins in response to the expression of symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, and analysis of the Bulgarian market. The objects of analysis are divided into different categories – water- and fat-soluble vitamins, degree of antioxidant activity, legal status (medicinal product or food supplement) registration procedure (marketing authorization/registration/notification), most commonly used pharmaceutical forms, sale volumes and values. The market survey was done in conjunction with the great scientific interest in the use of antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases whose pathogenesis is related to the action of free oxygen radicals. We have used data from Bulgarian and international medical journals, Internet sources, expert opinion and Delphi method, reports from distributors and data from IMS. The data analysis shows that the most widespread in practice and as sales are the oral forms of vitamin E and C.
